The Barrel House Ballroom

FRIDAY 26th MAY 2023:
The Barrel House Ballroom

16:00 - deep tan
One of a handful of up and coming young bands to have come through the Speedy Wunderground singles club, the London-based punks are politically astute, socially conscious but never preachy. We wanted to start the weekend off with a bang.

18:00 - Tapir!
“South London’s answer to the Temptations” will be filling the Barrel House stage with loose, melodic arrangements and catchy songwriting. Knotty folk hues from the 5-piece. Gorgeous stuff and a set the promises to be really transformative.

20:00 - Heartworms
Centred around songwriter Jojo Orme, Heartworms might well be this years’ hottest-hot-ticket. Gothic noir and tense post-punk, with playful hooks, there is darkness and light and it is all in a ferocious whirl. Dazed don’t just label anybody “the fearless new voice of British post-punk”.

22:00 - O.
We feel confident in saying this, you will not have heard drums and sax like this before! The third of our Speedy Wunderground appearances (a London-based duo) create a sound far bigger than the sum of its parts, live performance that properly takes a trip.

Friday at The Barrel House Ballroom will sound like this…

FRIDAY 26th MAY 2023:

SATURDAY 27th MAY:
St Mary’s Church

13:00 - Will Butterworth
Another opportunity to see solo pianist Will Butterworth in a solo set, this time with the epic reverbs of the beautiful and spacious church venue, exquisite playing that is both gossamer delicate and rolls like the sea .

14:15 - MF Tomlinson
Brisbane/Meanjin-born and London-based songwriter MF Tomlinson negotiates textures from acid folk and alt country to create a singular presence that defies easy categorisation. His recent release ‘We Are Still Wild Horses’ LP is - according to the sage heads at Drift - the year's finest chamber pop and this will be a beautiful opportunity to see a beautiful voice in a beautiful building.

16:15 - Clara Mann
The Bristolian singer-songwriter Clara Mann has a stunning voice. Fragile but deeply enthralling and characterful. This is one not to miss - truly transportative.

18:15 - MEMORIALS
The multi-instrumental duo of Verity Susman (Electrelane) and Matthew Simms (Wire). They have created some sort of musical alchemy with their collective experiences colliding in searing drones, weird clunks, pop melodies and psychedelic freakouts. The Church is going to feel beguiling.

20:15 - Bill Ryder-Jones
Bill Ryder-Jones returns to Devon four years (and one pandemic) after his full band Sea Change show in 2019, with an intimate solo piano and guitar show to headline St Mary’s Church. From co-founder of the much-loved band The Coral, through to one of the most celebrated songwriters of this generation, Bill will perform favourites from his back catalogue alongside first airings of new material.

Just ahead of Django Django’s huge new fifth LP - Off Planet - the band’s drummer/producer Dave Maclean will be joining us in town for a Django Django DJ takeover at Totnes Cinema. Expect the full gamut from synth-pop, krautrock and psychedelia to techno and vibrant indie rock. This one is going to be bubblin’.

SATURDAY 27th MAY 2023:
The Barrel House Ballroom

15:15 - The Vive
Last year, we ran an emerging talent competition for some of the young bands from the region to play at the 2022 weekend. We were totally blown away by The Vive, they have swagger well and truly beyond their years; some even said too much! It’s excellent to work with the ever-supportive Jamming Station team to showcase them at Weekender.

17:00 - Eyes Of Others
Described as making 'post-pub couldn't get in the club music', Edinburgh based John Bryden can undersell with a smile, because his self-titled debut - released just this month dropped - is a beguiling treasure; twilight hour music that trades in anything goes tapestries of texture and tone.

19:00 - M(h)aol
When Drift Records won't stop going on about a band and Steve Albini won’t stop going on about a band, you know there is going to be some serious clatter! The Irish intersectional feminist five piece make the kind of music with equal menace and humour, it’s vital stuff. Believe the hype.

21:00 - Lonelady
Headlining the ballroom this year is Manchester post-punk composer Lonelady, an artist who has been on the Sea Change wishlist for the last half-decade. Her most recent ‘Former Things’ album was a masterclass in driving maximalism and we’re honestly so thrilled to welcome her to town.

22:00 - Finders Keepers [DJ]
We’re utterly delighted to welcome Andy Votel and the Finders Keepers label to town for a DJ set that very well could end up going anywhere. For fans of psychedelia, jazz, folk, funk, avant-garde and whacked-out movie musak… but most of all those prepared to relinquish control to the spinning wheels of alternative pop history.

Saturday at The Barrel House Ballroom will sound like this…

SUNDAY 28th MAY
Sea Change Food + Drink Market

In the past, we’ve always found that what we really want on the Sunday of a Sea Change weekend is a nice wind-down with friends; a chance to recover after going hammer-and-tongs and opening our minds with music, art, film and literature. This year we’ve really cracked it with a Sunday Food Market and a community day right in the middle of town to really take in all the niceness that Totnes has to offer.

+ Verdant Brewing Co. Market Bar

+ Guest DJs, including; Jeff Barrett, Stone Club, French Tony, Robin Turner, The Heavenly Jukebox, Drift Records and more…

+ Food vendors and producers to include; Daddy D's Caribbean Curry, Gourmet Greek, Good Game Burgers, Wild Gelato, Coffee, World Foods and more.
